Dyrk didnât like the sound of that, and nobody else in the room seemed very keen either. For several long, uncomfortable moments, everyone chewed on Charlieâs story and the possible implications. Instinctively, Dyrk reached for Tessa under the table. Apparently sheâd been reaching for him at the same moment because their hands met in the middle. That filled him with a sense of security heâd never shared with a woman before.
So emboldened, he took a bracing breath and spoke in a clear, authoritative voice. âOkay, so we know who were looking for. Now we just need to bring him in.â
âEasier said than done,â Thrett said, reminding him of how Xavier had essentially vanished himself from the face of the planet.
âHave you had any luck tracking him so far?â Grizz asked Dyrk. âIt sounds like heâs had a lot of time and money on his hands to work on disappearing. I can tell you from experience, that can go a hell of a long way, but itâs not a foolproof advantage.â
âHereâs what we know so far,â Dyrkâs gaze panned around the room at them all. âWith the amount of money he fleeced from Stark Bradford, heâs doing a lot more than just hiding. Itâs safe to assume heâs using Starkâs money to fund those prison experiments, if thatâs whatâs really going on here like we think.â
âAgreed,â Charlie nodded. âIt doesnât fit the profile of someone who just wants to disappear.â
âBut why?â Tessa asked, making every head in the room turn to her.
âHeâs an evil old dickwad with a lot of money?â Elektra suggested, shrugging her shoulders. âThatâs usually all you need in this town.â
âBut he was in the perfect position to just be regular evil,â Tessa pointed out, which Dyrk found adorable but also very true. âHe could have moved to Iceland and lived quietly on Starkâs money forever. Right? Why go through all the trouble of experimenting on convicts?â
âWe donât have a clue, but we need to find out,â Dyrk said.
âCould be about making more money,â Elektra suggested. âPrisoners are an almost invisible population. Itâd be easy for him to get away with that and turn an insane profit with whatever he does with the data heâs farming.â
âHe could just be trying to make himself stronger.â Grizz growled, and that thought seemed to make everyone at the table nervous, especially Charlie. âGet rid of all the duds until he perfects the process, leave a trail of other criminal fuck-ups like Danque and the rest until he can use it on himself the right way.â
âWhat could a dragon do with those kinds of powers?â Tessa asked.
âWhat couldnât a dragon do with those kinds of powers?â Charlie said quietly, which made everyone shift uncomfortably. âWe have a strong sense of justice. We can breathe fire. We can fly. Weâre long-livedâ¦â
âA single snake shifter who underwent that treatment could stun a dragon and make them helpless,â Ragan added, âas Allon already knows far too well. I donât want to think about what a dragon could do with that firepower.
